Write a 5 pages paper on roman statue of the three graces. This statue is typical for second century A.D., it is highly recognizable and almost like a “canonic formula for representing the Graces” (Metropolitan Museum of Arts) throughout history. The Graces subsequently appeared in every medium known to man and on all kinds of objects. Goddesses are customarily shown as three naked women, holding hands or embracing each other while dancing in a circle. Many famous artists used the theme for their work, including Botticelli, Raphael, Antonio Canova, and Bertil Thorvaldsen. As stated before, the statue dates back to the 2nd century, which coincides with Pax Romana, a period in the history of ancient Rome that is marked mostly by the peace and prosperity of the Empire. The term Pax Romana was first coined and used by Edward Gibbon in his excellent book “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” and according to Gibbon, the period spanned over two hundred years from the first emperor, Augustus, to Marcus Aurelius, who died in 180 AD. (Gibbon, ch.II, p. 51) . During that time Rome did not expand by force or fought any long-lasting wars. It was a time of peace, progress, as Romans turned to art and life enjoyments. This new direction was encouraged by Emperors, especially those from the 2nd century, namely Marcus Aurelius who was a stoic philosopher, and Hadrian who ruled from 117 to 138 AD and who was a humanist and deeply Hellenophile in all his tastes. (University of Chicago) Hadrian was, among other things, a great patron of art, particularly Greek and received many praises from historians. Friedrich Schiller called him “Empire’s first servant”, while Gibbon called his time “the happiest era of human history”(Gibbon, p.21) Given these facts, it is not a wild assumption to say that his interest in Greek culture overall might have an influence on the creation of this statue. .
